Water is obviously important to a successful garden, and gardening during this drought period can be tricky, more so as the NWC water restriction is being enforced. However, there are creative ways to garden without contravening the rules of restriction including anything we can do to help reduce soil evaporation, prevent weeds, and using recycled water to keep the garden green.
Mulching
Mulching material can be utilized from lawn cuttings, a 1 to 2 inch layer of which can be spread around your plants to reduce soil evaporation while providing protection from direct sunlight. Mulch also helps to control the growth of weeds which rob the plant s and flowers of vital water and nutrients.
Watering
We need to intentionally follow the NWC watering restrictions as much as is possible in this persisting drought condition. If restrictions permit, you should water your gardens in the late afternoon or early morning. Avoid watering on windy and hot sunny days. Though laborious, you can use recycled rinse water collected from the kitchen sink (and washing machine). You should, however, always use fresh water on plants in containers or indoor plants.
Light root feeding (½ teaspoon/ gal of 20-20-20 fertilizer) is recommended during a drought but avoid over -feeding. A plant that is nutritionally healthy will be better prepared to withstand disease and drought.
Preventing or Controlling Weeds
Weeds growing in your gardens steal vital nutrients and precious water away from your plants and flowers therefore you should control weeds in your garden.
